Easy A (Feminist Film Theory)

In this movie review, I would like to discuss a female version of movie which is called Easy A. It is because based on the history many films at before majority lead role are the men and in this film is start with the woman lead role. The theory that this film had used is Feminist film Theory.

Theory Discussion

Feminist film theory is started in the 1920s. This theory is talk about the women's expression of her own subjectivity. It is a set of political practices seen through historical position of women as the subordinated, oppressed or exploited in dominant mides of production by male domination. It is because we can find out the ideology and social construction of women in every films. This themes of feminist theory have explored includes discrimination, stereotyping, objectification, oppression, and patriarchy.

Laura Mulvey talks about the gaze of gender in many films. She expanded on the concept of scopophilia to introduce visual pleasure and identification with the on screen male actor. She also said women on the screen can be seen as an exhibitionist, as a symbol of eroticism and visual pleasure and thus it holds the tendency "to-be-looked-at-ness" and ultimately, a "bearer of meaning"

Synopsis

The movies start with the musical greeting card by Olive's grandmother. Olive was played by Emma Stone. She hangs around the house all weekend by listening the song. It is because she lied to her friend, Rhiannon that not going camping with her parents. On the next day at school, Olive tell her friend that she has lost her virginity to a guy. One day, Olivia go to the party with that guy and go inside to the room pretend that they have sex each other. However, Rhiannon gives her a new identity call "dirty skank". She decides that take her clothes and turn into proactive clothing and have the letter A on the chest. She increase the popularity by her live webcast. Olive apologize her by texting Rhiannon. It ends with Olive and her new boyfriend,Todd by showing rode off the lawnmower.

Analysis

There are 3 things that how we look at feminism in in this films which includes it assumed predetermined sexual identity to expose the misrepresentation of women in films. The assumption here being female repression by a patriarchal society. For example, Rhiannon calls Olive with "dirty skank" She just show herself that she is the "dirty skank" to her. Let her show that who is the best one. (Julie Zeilinger, 2010)

Moreover, looking at the various female representation in the film and compare them, seeking out the final resolution of the "preferred" female representation is also the things that how we look at feminism in films. For instance, in the final scenes that Olive show on the webcast. Showing that what is her true colour. Gaining the popularity is the her thing but she wants tell them that she is not the bad woman that every person think of as she has the good side of her.

On top of that, the last thing that on how we look at feminism in film is looking at the female representation of the film from the female spectator's point of view. For example, every woman in school looking at Olive is the bad woman because she just do her "sex" with the college guy. She takes so short time to lost her "virginity".

Conclusion

I think this movie is very great is because this movie contains many female perspective and it have lots of humor in this film. Not many films are give a woman to be a lead role and this movie have. It is worth to watch to movies. Enjoy!
