Corpse Bride (German Expressionism)

In this movie review I would like to discuss about the animation movie named Corpse Bride. This movie is directed by Mike Johnson and Tim Burton. The theory that they use is about German Expressionism. This theory that have been used in nowadays life.

German expressionism has the themes that included revolt, self-analysis, madness and primitive, sexual savagery. This theory had start in within first world war which is in year 1919 to 1926. It started from the paiting and change to film productions and it also spread into the cinema in narrative and mise-en-scene. For example, the film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari which is which also using the German Expressionist theory. This film had showed us the fantastic, nightmarish sets with twisted structures and landscapes with sharp-pointed forms and oblique, curving lines. This theory also spread around Germany and Northern European states. The Expressionist movement today is considered as one of the artistic movement.

Synopsis
This movie is starts with in the dark city Victorian England. The couples Victor which is voice by Johnny Drop and the other one Victoria. This is the arranged marriage for them. When they first met, the boy do not know that he is love with her or not and it cause an awkward situation, When he went to the nearby forest to practice his vows, suddenly the root turns out to be the finger of a murdered woman in a wedding gown named Emily who voiced by Helena Bonham Carter. After his dizzy, Victor woke up at the Land of the Dead. In the end, Emily knew that she cannot married Victor and pass him to his wife, Victoria.

In this film, the content is gothic and surreal as it all about the unnatural and abnormal. It si in dark humor, and in its jolly portrait of death. For example, the two sets of worlds that was took place between the two character in the film such as the living world and the Land of the Dead. It is unnatural because we know that a living people unable to go to the Land of the Dead like Victor. Besides that, another scene that was unnatural is when Victor is going to marry Emily, the corps bride. The dull greys and blues of the living world contrast greatly with the vivid colors of the underworld. ( Gijs Grob, 2014)

Furthermore, the other style of German expressionism which include the high contrast which is low key lighting that create dramatic shadows. For example, when Victoria climbs out from the window, it has many many shadows in this scene. It is dark and scary. (Keva Peters Jr ,n.d) It is because the characters there lack the sincerity, hope, and imagination of a warmer atmosphere. The two different world have different colour and shadows, which bright in dead world and the dark in reality world.

In conclusion, although the German movement lasted only about seven years, This theory has been use in nowadays movies which is this movie. I think this film is not bad to me, I would rate this film 6/10.
